Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (25.5mm, 3.98 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. IMP CARAVSIVS P AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / MERCVR IO CON AVG, Mercury standing right, holding purse and long caduceus. Cf. RIC V 853 (for similar type). Dark brown patina, a couple spots of weakness. Near EF. Extremely rare and unpublished. Only one example of RIC V 853 in CoinArchives (Roma XIII, 1123 which hammered for 725 GBP). This coin with a different obverse legend, longer reverse legend, and most notably, with Mercury right instead of left. Likely the only known example and in excellent grade.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from Spink, 12 May 2000.
