POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (75 mm wide x 185 mm tall). A tall Gnathian epichysis with a very complex vine pattern in multiple registers applied to body and neck of the example. The squat round foot supports a bulbous body that turns into a long-lipped spout to one end and a handle that raises high over the spout, to then connect again at the shoulder of the vessel. Two molded heads of cherubs are present to either side of the pitcher to adorn the split at the neck. Several registers of polychromatic designs, starting with U patterns, vertical lines, small ivy designs, more U patterns, 2 grapevine patterns terminating with a last U pattern are present on the body of the vessel. Spout has been reattached. A very attractive piece that would make a great display item. |
