Crowned facing bust / Long cross pattée with voided quatrefoil at center; triple pellets in quarters. North 1685; SCBC 2168. Short of flan nevertheless the king’s name, mint mark and mint reading all clear. Good VF. With a very bold portrait. Very rare and among the finest known.

From the James P. Rosen Collection. Purchased from J. Linzalone, December 2014. Reportedly found at Bacton, Suffolk.

The majority of pennies struck at York for Richard III bear the T and key - for Archbishop Thomas Rotherham - by the king’s face and with a mint mark of either the boar’s head (SCBC 2166) or, less frequently, a rose (SCBC 2167). Only one other example of the type offered here without T and key by neck and with mint mark sun and rose 2 (SCBC 2168) has appeared at auction in the past 25 years.
