Crowned facing bust within double polylobe with fleurs at cusps, nothing on breast; two plain arches in crown / Long cross pattée; three pellets in quarters. P&W type IIa and p. 273-4 (this coin cited); SCBI 23 (Ashmolean), 197 (same rev. die); North 1704; SCBC 2195. Toned. Good VF.

The enclosed imperial crown first encountered on the type IIa Groats projected a new understanding of kingship that was also abundantly evident in the contemporaneous first gold Sovereigns for Henry VII. This particular Groat with cinquefoil mark on obverse and no mark on reverse is a very rare variety. Potter and Winstanley knew of only two: the example in the Ashmolean and the piece offered here.
