TUDOR. Henry VIII. 1509-1547. AR Testoon (31mm, 7.29 g, 2h). Third coinage. Bristol mint; im: (WS). Struck 1546 -1547. Crowned and mantled facing bust / Crowned rose; crowned Һ R flanking. Whitton p. 320, 2; North 1843; SCBC 2368. Slight weakness in parts otherwise struck on a broad flan with excellent surfaces. Good VF. Very rare, especially so this fine.

From the James P. Rosen Collection. Ex M. Hughes (Spink 139, 16 November 1999), lot 7; E.M. Norweb (Part II, Spink 48, 13 November 1985), lot 332; Spink Numismatic Circular LXVII.12 (December 1959), no. 18316.

The Bristol mint opened in April 1546 under the control of the notorious William Sharrington. This handsome Testoon was struck in the brief period between the mint prior to Henry VIII’s death the following year. The dies were produced locally by Thomas Evenett. By this point the silver in the coinage had been reduced to a mere four ounces meaning that two third of the alloy used was base metal. Consequently most Bristol Testoons are encountered in a poor state of preservation with very little if any of the original surface remaining.
