France. Circa 1415 AD. Leaf (4.53”x5.98”). Medieval Book of Hours. Illuminated leaf containing Psalm 37: 20-23 in the Vulgate on one side and Psalm 50: 1-7a in the Vulgate on the other. From a prayer book worthy of someone of some means for the time. Attractive gold, rose, red, blue, and white illumination. Some fading. Minimal browning and tiny tears at edge. Slight wrinkling. Old code and price penciled in at lower margin. VF.

From the Sand Collection.

A wonderful leaf containing parts of two famous Psalms of David. Psalm 50 (51 in the Protestant Bible) notably recounts David’s remorse and authentic repentance after being confronted by Nathan the prophet on account of David’s adultery with Bathsheba. After committing adultery with the wife of Uriah the Hittite, David conspires to have him killed in battle while on campaign and orders his general Joab to put Uriah into the worst area of the fighting. After successfully having her husband killed in battle, David makes Bathsheba his wife. The consequences of this action and the rebuke David receives for these serious sins are recounted in II Samuel chapters 11-12.
