POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (255 mm tall x 100 mm wide). A stylized epichysis with fine lines and red painted glaze designs over the example. A small, tapered foot meets an elongated, tapered body that abruptly forms a shoulder at about half height. From the shoulder, a long, skinny neck extends into a trefoil type lip that flares out abruptly. A single handle extends high to slope downwards to the edge of the shoulder. Design wise, the body is painted with a double leaf vine pattern, with several sections of solid glaze defining borders. On the shoulder, a running meandros pattern surrounds the field. The neck has vertical lines that run the whole way around the piece, flanked again by lines and filled in sections. Glaze also present on the foot. . Wear present on glaze at points, in some areas more so than others. Loss at one side of rim. Despite the commentary, this is a beautiful example of the type. |
