Upon his election as pope, Callistus III intended to launch a crusade to liberate the recently captured city of Constantinople from the Turks. Though organizing Christian Europe against the Ottomans was his primary concern, the Pope was unable to unite the feuding states of western Europe. Only a few battles were successfully waged against the Turks, including the August 1457 Battle of Mytilene, in which a small number of Papal ships defeated a larger Ottoman fleet.
