STATUARY. CHINA. In the style of the late Yuan or Ming Dynasty. Terracotta portion of wall design with four figures 230 mm wide by 190 mm tall. A beautiful tile that may have been part of the decoration of an aristocratic tomb with four male figures in high relief.
On the left, the figure on horseback dominates the scene, the rider's garments reveal the folds and layers that suggest status and importance;the central figure, perhaps a messenger or a servant, holding a package; to the right, the adult figure carrying a child on their shoulder, while the child, perched above, gazes forward. The entire composition is framed by the raw edges of the terracotta
. The package they cradle might have held precious cargo, symbolic of an offering or a gift in transit—a motif often seen in artworks from this period. |
