SICILY, Gela. Circa 420-405 BC. Æ Tetras – Trionkion (18mm, 3.48 g, 12h). Bull standing left, head lowered, as if to charge; four (sic) pellets (mark of value) in exergue / Head of the river-god Gelas right; barley grain behind neck. Cf. Jenkins, Gela, Group VIII-IX, 501; cf. CNS 9; cf. HGC 2, 379; cf. SNG Morcom 585 (all with three pellets in exergue on obverse). Dark green patina with earthen highlights, some roughness. Overstruck on a Syracuse tetras (cf. SNG ANS 415). VF. Unpublished with four pellets in exergue, likely an engraver’s error. |
