Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (25.9mm, 2.73 g, 12h). Khusraw Shadh Hurmuz. Dated AH 97 (AD 715/6). Klat 284; Al-‘Ajlan p.213, no. 16. Good VF, minor peripheral hornsilver. Very rare.

Khusraw Shadh Hurmuz is one of the rarest Umayyad dirham mints, known only from a small number of specimens dated AH 97. Its name is that of a district in Iraq located between the Tigris and the Nahrawan canal, to the east of the future site of Baghdad.

Three other extremely rare Umayyad dirham mints were located within the district of Khusraw Shadh Hurmuz. Two of these, Nahrbuq and Radhan, are only known for the year AH 90. The third, al-Madinat al-’Atiqa, is only recorded for AH 97 - the same date as the present coin. Bahurasir, another Umayyad mint active only in the year AH 97, lay opposite al-Madinat al-’Atiqa on the western bank of the Tigris.

Closing Date and Time: at 14:16:40 ET.
