Bahri Mamluks. al-Muzaffar Baybars II. AH 708-709 / AD 1309-1310. AV Dinar (24.4mm, 5.36 g, 3h). Al-Qahira al-Mahrusa mint. Dated AH 708 (AD 1309). With title Abu’l-Fath. cf. Morton & Eden Auction 73, lot 136; Album —; ICV 977. EF. Extremely rare.

The short-lived Sultan Baybars II came to power after the abdication of Muhammad I in AH 708. He had previously been Muhammad’s governor in Egypt, and had also served in the Mamluk army which defeated the Mongols at Marj al-Saffar in AH 702, thereby ending Mongol raids into Syria. He was also entrusted with the prestigious, if potentially hazardous, position of the Sultan’s official food-taster.

Baybars II’s short reign was marked by economic and political unrest, culminating in riots on the streets of Cairo. Baybars fled the city but was captured and executed, having ruled only ten months and twenty-four days. After his death, Muhammad I returned to rule for a third time, going on to reign for a further thirty years.
