Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (19mm, 3.92 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. IMP CARAVSIVS P I AG [sic], radiate and draped bust right / Blundered and retrograde legend intended to read CONCORDIA [...], Concordia standing left, holding uncertain object and scepter; V|–//ML(retrograde). RIC V 27 var. (obv. legend); Hunter 20 = RIC V 27 = P. Webb, “The Reign and Coinage of Carausius” in NC 1907, 29. Olive brown-green patina, overstruck on an uncertain antoninianus. Good VF. Extremely rare.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from Spink, 21 October 2003.

An interesting coin with shares a type with the Hunter coin but is surprisingly not from the same dies. The overstriking on the reverse making the reverse legend indecipherable and only knowable from the Hunter example.

Closing Date and Time: 6 November 2024 at 13:00:40 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
