Allectus. Romano-British Emperor, AD 293-296. Antoninianus (23.5mm, 4.95 g, 6h). ‘C’ mint. Radiate and cuirassed bust right / Laetitia standing left, holding wreath and anchor set on ground to right; S|P//C. RIC V 79; Burnett, Coinage 133; A. H. Baldwin, “A find of coins of Carausius and Allectus from Colchester” in NC 1930, 119 (this coin – one of). Toned partial silvering and dark brown patina, minor doubling. EF. Very high grade for issue and wonderful with silvering. This coin is consistent in condition with coins from the 1927 Colchester hoard. While there were 7 coins in the hoard of this type, since this coin is from the same group as Triton XXVII, 893 and CNG 574, 586 (both belonging to the hoard and with similar surfaces) there is little reason to doubt Dr. Lyne’s pedigree on this particular piece. |
