Allectus. Romano-British Emperor, AD 293-296. Antoninianus (22mm, 4.96 g, 6h). ‘C’ mint. Radiate and cuirassed bust right / Providentia standing left, holding wand over globe set at feet to left and cornucopia; S|P//C. RIC V 111; Burnett, Coinage 173; A. H. Baldwin, "A find of coins of Carausius and Allectus from Colchester" in NC 1930, 168 (this coin). Toned near complete silvering, slight porosity, doubling and cleaning scratches on reverse. EF. The only example of this issue from the 1927 Colchester hoard. Wonderful in such high grade and with substantial silvering. Though the cleaning scratches on the reverse are regrettable and likely occurred during the cleaning attempted by the first owner of the hoard prior to Baldwin’s purchased of it. |
