Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (21mm, 4.07 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 312-313. Laureate, helmeted, and cuirassed bust left, balteus across shoulder, holding spear and shield / Sol standing left, raising hand and holding globe; *|–//PLN. RIC VI –; RML 528 (forthcoming; this coin cited); C&T 7.09.001 (2) (this coin cited and illustrated). Glossy dark brown-green patina, minor die wear. Good VF. Extremely rare. This example the finest of two known.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from David Miller, 2 August 2012. Ex Mike Vosper.

While C&T consider this and similar busts to be draped, the ‘drapery’ is generally a balteus strap (either simple or elaborate) slung across the shoulder supporting the shield. See RML pp. 87-8 for discussion. We have elected to follow RML’s cataloging of this bust type here.

Closing Date and Time: 6 November 2024 at 13:27:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
