LYCIA, Phaselis. 5th-4th centuries BC. AR Obol (10mm, 1.18 g). Astragalos / Owl standing facing, wings spread, within incuse square. Cf. Heipp-Tamer 80 (for a later issue with these types and ethnic of Phaselis); CNG 73, lot 421 var. (incuse circle); cf. Brindley 472 (hemiobol, owl right [Mallos]); otherwise, unpublished. Faintly toned, granular surfaces. VF. Very rare.

Prior attributions of this type to Mallos appear to be solely based on the obverse type, which is a symbol common to Mallos, but the Heipp-Tamer coin, bearing the ethnic of Phaselis make the attribution of the anepigraphic issues to that city almost certain.

Closing Date and Time: 20 November 2024 at 10:50:20 ET.
