MYSIA, Pergamum. Caracalla, with Geta as Caesar. AD 198-217. Æ (35mm, 23.65 g, 5h). Damnatio Memoriae. Claudianus, son of Terpandros, strategos. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right vis-à-vis bare-headed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Geta left; c/m: male head left / Tyche standing left, wearing kalathos, holding patera and cornucopia; crowned by Nike standing to right holding palm. Weisser, Pergamon 1650; SNG BN –; SNG von Aulock 7515. For c/m: Howgego –. Red-brown surfaces, porosity, cleaning scratches. Near VF. Very rare. Portrait of Geta erased, Caracalla’s damnatio memoriae of Geta applied after his murder in AD 211.

The majority of Caracalla’s damnatio memoriae was applied at Stratonicaea in Caria; the other city where it was applied with great frequency was Pergamum.
