Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (23.5mm, 4.22 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. IMP C CARAVSIVS P F I AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / SALV S AVG, Salus standing left, holding scepter and feeding serpent from patera which is coiled about and rising from altar at feet to left; S|C//–. RIC V – but cf. 519 (for similar issue). Brown patina with verdigris deposits, overstruck, minor weakness, slight roughness. Good VF. Overstruck on a VIRTVS AVG, Virtus advancing right holding transverse spear type. Very rare. An interesting overstrike.
