IONIA, Erythrai(?). 6th century BC. EL Hemihekte – Twelfth Stater (8.5mm, 1.36 g). Phokaic standard. Stellate or floral object / Quadripartite incuse square. Konuk & Lorber fig. 13; Adams I 81 (same dies); otherwise unpublished in the standard references. Underlying luster. EF.

These stellate/floral issues, known in multiple denominations (cf. SNG von Aulock 7776 [trite]; CNG 97, lot 181 [myshemihekte]; and SNG Berry 1021 [forty-eighth stater]), are speculated to be the earliest electrum from Erythrai, based on the similarity of this obverse type to the reverses on the earliest silver of that city (cf. Boston MFA 1837–41).

The final winners of all Triton XXIII lots will be determined at the live public sale that will be held on 14-15 January 2020. Triton XXIII – Session Two – Greek Coinage Part II through Roman Imperial Coinage Part I will be held Tuesday afternoon, 14 January 2020 beginning at 2:00 PM ET.
