Knight on horseback galloping right; coat-of-arms below / Crowned coat-of-arms within leonine supporters. P&W Ut 59; CNM 2.43.99; Delmonte, Argent 1031; Davenport 1832; KM 83.1. Toned, sea salvaged. VF.
From the Don T. Hayes Collection, purchased from Stuart Rubenfeld. Ex 1711 De Liefde wreck.
This sea-salvaged 1711 silver rider is likely a product of the 1711 wreck of the VOC vessel De Liefde. The ship fatefully elected to traverse the perilous north sea in an attempt to avoid French privateers by taking a roundabout route to Batavia in the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Jakarta, Indonesia). De Liefde was destroyed by a winter storm off the coast of Shetland and its massive cargo of 1711 silver riders were lost to sea until a large part of the treasure was recovered in diving expeditions in the 1960s.
