ATTICA, Athens. Circa 454-404 BC. Fourrée Drachm (15mm, 2.39 g, 9h). Helmeted head of Athena right, with frontal eye / Owl standing right, head facing; olive spray to left; all within incuse square. For prototype: cf. Kroll 10; cf. HGC 4, 1631. Deposits, breaks in plating, scrtaches. VF. Likely from the famous Emergency Issue of 406/5 BC.

From the Libertas Collection, purchased 4 December 1972.

Presently, the only fourrées that can be conclusively linked to the Emergency Issue of 406/5 BC are those that are struck from the same dies as the coins found in the Piraeus hoard. Although the present coin is not an exact match with any of the dies, the style here is extremely close, particularly to those drachms that were struck from obverse dies a and b. As such, it is highly likely that this coin is also from the famous Emergency Issue.

Closing Date and Time: 4 October 2023 at 10:45:20 ET.
