IONIA, Smyrna. Hadrian. AD 117-138. AR Cistophorus (27mm, 10.66 g, 6h). Struck AD 128-138. Bare head right / Zeus seated left on throne, holding Victory and scepter; at feet, eagle standing left, head right. Metcalf, Cistophori, type 30, 132 var. (O12/R- [unlisted rev. die]); RPC III 1359; RSC 272. Toned, light deposits. VF. Overstruck on a Cistophorus of Augustus, RPC 2214. Rare.

Ex Harlan J. Berk inventory, cc46286.

This coin is notable in a couple of ways. The coin was overstruck on an earlier cistophorus of Augustus with the wheat ears reverse, RPC 2214, the wheat is visible on the obverse on Hadrian’s neck and in the field before his chin. This obverse die pairing was not known to Metcalf for this reverse type, it was only paired with the eagle standing on thunderbolt type (Metcalf 31). This reverse die was not known to him.

Closing Date and Time: 4 October 2023 at 13:10:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
