The Caesarians. Julius Caesar. January-April 46 BC. AR Denarius (17.5mm, 3.79 g, 1h). Uncertain mint, possibly Utica. Wreathed head of Ceres right; c/m: MP VES (retrograde and ligate) in incuse rectangle / Emblems of the augurate and pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, guttus, and lituus; D (donativum = largess) to right. Cf. Crawford 467/1a (without countermark); cf. CRI 57 (same); cf. Sydenham 1023 (same); cf. RSC 4a (same); cf. RBW 1637 (same); cf. Howgego 839 (for countermark); cf. Pangerl 100 (same). Toned, minor porosity, light scratches, minor deposits. Coin and c/m: Good Fine.

An interesting find of Howgego’s countermark 839, applied between 1 January AD 74 and 23 June AD 79 at Ephesus. Found here on a Republican denarius of Julius Caesar
