IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VIRTV S AVGGG, Virtus-Mars standing right, holding spear and resting hand on shield set on ground to right; S|P//C. RIC V 30 var. (bust); cf. CNG 58, lot 1326 (cuirassed, hammered for $325). Dark brown patina, slightly off center reverse. Good VF. Extremely rare.

“The actual location of the minting sites used by the Carausian administration has for many years been the subject of much discussion. It has been generally accepted that those coins bearing a mark of L, often in combination with other letters, were issued from a central mint based in Londinivm, but those bearing the mark C, again often in combination, have been attributed to Cataractonivm (Stukeley 1757), Camvlodvnvm (Webb 1933 and Askew 1951), or Clavsentum (Mattingly 1945) with Glevvm also being put forward as a tentative possibility on epigraphic grounds (Burnett and Casey 1984).” (Hugh P.G.
