Obsolete Banknote. Columbia, South Carolina. State of South Carolina Revenue Bond Scrip. $5. March 2, 1872. SCCR05. Uncirculated. The British offered to exchange prisoners in the summer of 1781. A British officer, James DePayster, was sent to meet with General Francis Marion, otherwise known as “The Swamp Fox,” for his guerilla war tactics through the marshes and swamps. After the prisoner exchange was completed, General Marion offered the British officer lunch, which consisted of nothing but sweet potatoes and water. The sweet potato skins were saved by Marion and fed to his horse. “James DePayster was so overwhelmed by the events of the meal that when he returned to Georgetown with the results of his mission, he resigned his commission declaring that any army which could endure such privations could never be conquered” (R. H. Durand, Interesting Notes About History, pp. 126-7). This is probably the latest use of the "Sweet Potato Dinner" vignette on paper money.
