France. Circa late 15th Century AD. Leaf 4.44”x6.33”). Medieval Book of Hours. Leaf containing the Litany of the Saints (somewhat abbreviated). Containing part I. Supplicatio ad Deum beginning on the lower half of the first page. Continuing into part II with the Invocatio Sanctorum, an abbreviated Patriarchae et Prophetae, and ending with the first two lines of Apostoli et Discipuli – “Sancte Petre, Sancte Paule.” A wonderful example of the famous prayer worthy of someone of some means for the time. Lovely gold, red, and blue illumination. Good ink quality and quite readable. Minor browning and small tears at edge. Old code penciled in at lower margin. Good VF.

One of the oldest litanies upon which many others were modeled. Recorded in usage by Pope Gregory the Great circa 590 who prescribed it to be used in processions of thanksgiving.
