Italy. Circa AD 1475. Leaf (4.13”x5.56”). Medieval Book of Hours. Attractive illuminated leaf of Psalm 50 in the Vulgate (51 in the Protestant Bible), containing verses 15-21. From a prayer book worthy of someone of some means for the time. Lovely gold, rose, blue, and green illumination from a famous psalm. Slight browning and minor edge tears. Minor spots of fading. Old code and price penciled in at lower margin. Good VF.

Psalm 51 recounts David’s remorse and authentic repentance after being confronted by Nathan the prophet on account of David’s adultery with Bathsheba. After committing adultery with the wife of Uriah the Hittite, David conspires to have him killed in battle while on campaign and orders his general Joab to put Uriah into the worst area of the fighting. After successfully having her husband killed in battle, David makes Bathsheba his wife. The consequences of this action and the rebuke David receives for these serious sins are recounted in II Samuel chapters 11-12.
