Constans II. 641-668. Æ Pentanummium (14.5mm, 0.81 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. Crowned facing bust / Large Є; cross above; U(?) to left, Є to right. DOC –; MIB –; SB –. Brown patina, roughness. Good Fine. Extremely rare and unpublished.
A new denomination for Constans II. A clear pentanummium, with the Є denomination mark quite visible paired with Constans’ distinctive bust. Unfortunately if there was a mint-mark it has since corroded beyond a point of legibility. While the bust somewhat resembles the decanummi of Syracuse (SB 1115-1115A), the composition of the coin’s reverse also somewhat resembles some of the Carthage pentanummi of Maurice (SB 568-9). While the Carthage Decanummi of Constans use two V’s for the denomination mark, it should be noted that the Carthage pentanummi of Maurice use both the Latin V and the Greek Є for the mark of value. Ultimately, this coin is a fascinating new find and represents a formerly undiscovered denomination for Constans II.
