ROMAN. Provincial. Lot of six (6) River-god themed provincial coins, Thrace and Moesia Inferior. Includes:

1) THRACE, Philippopolis. Commodus. AD 177-192. Æ (28mm, 12.24 g, 6h). Q. Caeilius Servilianus, legatus Augusti pro praetore Thraciae. Struck AD 181-183. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / River-god Hebrus reclining left, holding reed in both hand, resting elbow on urn from which water flows; to left, tree. Varbanov, Philippopolis XI.22.1 var. (reed in left hand not recorded); Mouchmov, Philippopolis 160 var. (same); RPC IV.1 Online 7514 var. (same); Varbanov 942 var. (same). Brown patina, flan crack. Near Fine. Very rare variety.

2) MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Macrinus, with Diadumenian as Caesar. AD 217-218. Æ Pentassarion (27mm, 12.60 g, 1h). Pontianus, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Macrinus on left vis-à-vis bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust of Diadumenian on right / River-god Istrus seated left, holding reed, elbow on rock, resting right hand on prow of ship; Є (mark of value) in upper left field. H&J, Marcianopolis 6.24.32.1; AMNG I 754 var. (obv. type, same rev. die); Varbanov 1281 corr. (prow not mentioned). Dark green patina, light porosity. Near VF. Rare.

3) MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Macrinus, with Diadumenian as Caesar. AD 217-218. Æ Pentassarion (27mm, 12.47 g, 1h). Pontianus, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Bare head of Diadumenian on left vis-à-vis laureate head of Macrinus on right / River-god Istrus seated left, holding reed, elbow on rock, resting right hand on prow of ship; Є (mark of value) in upper left field. H&J, Marcianopolis 6.24.32.2 var. (obv. legend placement); AMNG I 754; Varbanov 1284 var. (same). Yellow-brown patina, light roughness. Near VF.

4) MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Macrinus, with Diadumenian as Caesar. AD 217-218. Æ Pentassarion (28mm, 10.42 g, 12h). Pontianus, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Bare head of Diadumenian on left vis-à-vis laureate head of Macrinus on right / River-god Istrus seated left, holding reed, elbow on rock, resting right hand on prow of ship; Є (mark of value) in upper left field. H&J, Marcianopolis 6.24.32.2 var. (obv. legend placement); AMNG I 754; Varbanov 1284 var. (same). Yellow-brown patina, light roughness, pitting, flan crack, obverse die shift. Near VF.

5) THRACE, Hadrianopolis. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ Tetrassarion (24mm, 6.58 g, 1h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / River-god Tonzus reclining left, holding reed and resting elbow on urn from which water flows. Jurukova, Hadrianopolis 469 (V230/R455); RPC VII.2 734; Varbanov 3835. Yellow-brown surfaces, traces of find patina, porosity. Good Fine.

6) MOESIA INFERIOR, Istrus. Gordian III, with Tranquillina. AD 238-244. Æ Pentassarion (27mm, 11.32 g, 12h). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III right, vis-à-vis diademed and draped bust of Tranquillina left / River-god Istros reclining left, holding reed and resting elbow on urn from which water flows; E (mark of value) in left field. RPC VII.2 1820; AMNG –; Varbanov –. Rough brown patina. Fine. Extremely rare, possibly the second known. Only one specimen known to RPC. For Lot: Fine-Near VF. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Six (6) coins in lot.
