SICILY, Panormus. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ (23mm, 7.79 g, 6h). ΠANOP MITAN, bare head left / Eagle standing facing, head right, with wings displayed, holding clutch of arrows in its talons. Martini 220-39 var. (animal in eagle’s talons); RPC I 640 var. (same); CNS 19 var. (same); Gabrici 322-4 var. (same). Green surfaces, light roughness and smoothing. VF. Extremely rare, unpublished in RPC, only this coin in CoinArchives.

From the St. George Collection, purchased from Mike Vosper. Ex Numismatik Lanz (21 May 2007), lot 72.

This reverse type, with the eagle clutching arrows, is apparently borrowed from a much earlier series. There is a type with Zeus on the obverse and city ethnic around the eagle on the reverse (CNS 11), but struck during the early Roman Republian era, after 241 BC.
