Justin II. 565-578. AV Tremissis (17.5mm, 1.46 g). Constantinople mint. Blank incuse / Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; star to right; CONOB. DOC 13; MIBE 11a; SB 353. Some luster, slightly wavy flan, some faint scratches. Near EF.

A most interesting mint error. The obverse of this coin was struck, evidenced by a round incuse depression with an unintelligible design. It appears that the obverse die may have been reversed when this coin was struck which caused the blank end of the obverse die to end up striking the coin. This left behind the present blank incuse with a wavy design (contours and undulations from the flaws in the metal of the die’s blank end).

Since this reverse type was in usage from the reigns of Anastasius I to Justin II, a word should be said about the attribution here to Justin II given the lack of an obverse. In part, the style of this reverse die most closely resembles some of those of Justin II. However, the most conclusive evidence present is the letter form of the M in AVGVSTORVM. On many of the reverse dies of Justin II’s tremisses, this M, when present, takes a letter form closer to a H as is found here.
