Heraclius. 610-641. Æ 12 Nummi (17mm, 7.45 g, 6h). Uncertain Egyptian mint, Fustat(?). Struck circa 685/90-circa 700/5. Crowned and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus surmounted by palm frond / Large IMB; ABAZ. Tony Goodwin, “The Egyptian Arab-Byzantine Coinage” in Oddy et al. Coinage and History in the Seventh Century Near East 4, 2015, Type II; cf. David Woods, “A Note on the Arab-Byzantine Dodecanummium Struck in the Name of ‘Abd al-’Aziz ibn Marwan” in INR, Vol. 16, 2021 (for issue). DOC –; MIB X35 (Constans II); BMC 304-5; SB –. Dark red-brown and green patina. Fine. Rare.

From an interesting Egyptian issue that has been the subject of some recent excellent scholarship. Studied by Tony Goodwin and published in his 2015 article as well as by David Woods in 2021, the legend in the exergue is no longer thought to be entirely enigmatic but may be a reference to the contemporary Arab governor ‘Abd al-’Aziz rendered in Greek.

Closing Date and Time: 15 November 2023 at 13:37:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
