18th CENTURY CONDER TOKENS, Middlesex. Political & Social Series. The Cabbage Society. CU Penny Token (33mm, 16.86 g, 6h). Dated 1796. THE CABBAGE SOCIETY, cabbage / * PURIM * 1796 around central six-lobed flower. Edge: /// over AN ASYLUM FOR THE OPRESSED OF ALL NATIONS. D&H 227a. Brown surfaces, minor marks. EF.

From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection.

Little is known about this early society or club, but it is presumed to have a Jewish connection. There are three early tokens: a penny dated 1796 and a halfpenny and farthing dated 1780, as well as an 1814 dated penny which all bear this curious device and name. However, on these earlier three is the word 'PURIM' which possibly indicates that the Cabbage Society was a Jewish organisation.

Curiously, however, the device illustrated on the obverses of theses tokens is a cauliflower. It is possible that it may have a connection with a society of tradesmen who met in a room on Paternoster Row, where a cabbage was painted on the ceiling.

Closing Date and Time: 15 November 2023 at 15:31:20 ET.
