Amphinomus was a hero who carried his elderly father to safety during the eruption of Mt. Aetna. His brother Anapias carried their mother. They refused to abandon their parents even as the lava was about to overtake them, but miraculously, the lava parted and they were saved. This act was celebrated as a model of filial piety throughout Greek and early Roman culture.
