Hadrian. AD 117-138. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.20 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck August-December AD 117. Laureate bust right, slight drapery / Trajan and Hadrian, both togate, standing vis-à-vis, clasping hands; ADOPTIO in exergue. RIC II.3 8; RSC 2. Toned, faint hairlines, light deposits. Near VF.

From the Lionel Tenby Collection.

An uncommonly encountered denarius of Hadrian. From his first issue, this reverse depicts Hadrian with his predecessor Trajan clasping hands in harmony. It was intended to demonstrate the legitimacy of Hadrian’s claim to having been adopted by Trajan and designated as his heir on his deathbed. The reverse legend adds ADOPTIO in the exergue, making the implication unambiguous.
