DYNASTS of LYCIA. Uncertain dynast. Circa 480/70-430 BC. AR Twenty-fourth Stater (8mm, 0.41 g). Crab; dotted border / Quadripartite incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. Lightly toned, some porosity. Good VF. Extremely rare.

From the Tiny Art Collection.

Fractional sliver issues with a crab and incuse are known from the earliest issues at Kos, but this particular coin differs from those, in that it has a dotted border, has a quadripartite incuse, and a very thin flan. The key to it’s attribution is the weight, which does not comport with any of the early standards used at Rhodes, but is a perfect fit in the Lycian dynastic system, where a crab type is known on issues of the early to mid 5th century BC.
