LACONIA, Las. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ Assarion (21mm, 3.77 g, 8h). Struck circa AD 202-205. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Terminal figure (of Las?), cloaked and holding an uncertain curved object, before a balustrade under a curved arch supported by two columns. BCD Peloponnesos 990; NCP –; BMC –. Earthen brown patina, small pit, obverse off center. VF. Very rare, possibly the second known.

Note in BCD: Precisely what is being shown on the reverse is uncertain. The figure is similar to the terminal Herakles found on coins of Gytheion, but the details are quite different. More probably, it may represent the tomb of the city’s founder, the hero Las, who was buried on the nearby promatory of Arainos.
