POTTERY. Greek Southern Italian Colonies. c. 4th-3rd Cent. BCE. (165 mm tall x 85 mm wide). A heavily restored lekythos with a complex design on the body of the piece. The flat foot meets a tapered body that expands to a wide vessel, tapering again to form a long neck. the lip is flared and rounded. A handle extends from the widest part of the neck onto itself practically. On the vessel’s body, a central design on the body, flanked with a second register atop it on the wide part of the neck is present. The body features an armed warrior, wearing a helm and holding his shield and spear, faces left. Flanked to either side, two attendants on either side hold spears and come before him, attending to his needs. The bottom third of the vessel is black in glaze, setting the ground for the scene. Atop, on the wide of the neck, a phallic Rosette is flanked by two attendants. This piece has been reassembled and crudely repainted.. The original scene is quite attractive.
