KINGS of PERSIS. Vahbarz (Oborzos). 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.78 g, 12h). Istakhr (Persepolis) mint. Diademed head right, with mustache and earring, wearing kyrbasia / whwbrz = “Vahbarz”) in Aramaic down outer left, prtrk’ zy ’lhy’ (= “fratarakā of the gods”) in Aramaic in exergue, w (= “V[ahbarz]”) in Aramaic to inner left, prs (= “Persis”) in Aramaic down inner right, n in Aramaic down outer right, fire temple of Ahura-Mazda; to left, Vahbarz standing right; standard to right. Cf. K&M 2/11 (for type); cf. Alram 526 (same); cf. De Morgan 5a and 5b and plate XXVII, 7-8 (same); Sunrise –; Prospero 624 (same dies). Toned, hint of smoothing and graffiti lp/f (= “for P/F”) in Aramaic in obverse field. EF. Overstruck on a tetradrachm of Ardaxšir (Artaxerxes) I, itself overstruck on an uncertain Greek undertype.
