PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (Physcon). 145-116 BC. AR Tetradrachm (25mm, 13.20 g, 1h). Paphos mint. Dated RY 36 (135/4 BC). Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis around neck / Eagle, with closed wings, standing left on thunderbolt; L Λς (date) to left, ΠA to right. DCA2 1123 (this coin referenced); otherwise, unpublished. Lightly toned, underlying luster, minor marks, off center on obverse. Good VF. Unique.

Ex Gemini V (6 January 2009), lot 750; Donald H. Doswell Collection.

Cathy Lorber, who cataloged the coin for Gemini V, confirms that this issue remains unique today, and is from the mint of Paphos, but is uncertain about the attribution to Ptolemy VIII. It may actually be an issue of Ptolemy VI at Paphos, but the current evidence for attributing it to either king is not persuasive.
