DECAPOLIS, Petra(?). Marcus Aurelius. As Caesar, AD 139-161. Æ (22.5mm, 7.52 g, 2h). Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Pius galloping left on horse, raising right hand, chlamys billowing behind. RPC IV.3 Online 3982. Brown patina with earthen highlights. Good Fine. Very rare enigmatic issue.

There is no indication of a city name on this coin, just the names and titles of Aurelius and his adoptive father, Antoninus Pius. RPC lists the region, city, and obverse identity as uncertain but we do know a couple of things: the obverse legend was only used by Marcus Aurelius during his reign as Caesar. And while the reverse legend does not help identify the city, of the eight cited in RPC, now nine with this coin, we know that at least two of them were found in or around the city of Petra. This does not guarantee Petra as the mint of course, the coins could have been dropped there in trade, but it does show that they circulated in the area.
