Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (26mm, 2.69 g, 7h). Tustar mint. Dated AH 79 (AD 698/9). Klat 196 (same obverse die); al- ‘Ajlan p. 92, no. 21. Minor graffiti in fields. VF, lightly toned. Excessively rare.

Tustar, the modern Shushtar, was located in Khuzistan, about sixty miles north of Ahwaz. It was watered by the Dujayl river, and mediaeval accounts speak of it as being surrounded by gardens where fruit including grapes, oranges, dates, pomegranates and pears grew plentifully. Tustar was also the location of the celebrated Band-i Kaisar, a dam and arched bridge built across the river in Sasanian times. Its name, which translates as ‘Caesar’s Dam’, refers to a tradition that this remarkable structure was built by Roman prisoners of war captured after the defeat of Valerian by Shapur I in AD 260.
