Aghlabids. Ahmad b. Ziyadat Allah b. Qurhub. Emir of Sicily, AH 296-303 / AD 909-916. AV Quarter-Dinar (11.5mm, 1.06 g, 8h). Without mint-name. Dated AH 302 (AD 914/5). Bernardi 148; Album G453. EF. Extremely rare.

Driven out by the rise of the Fatimids, and unable to quell unrest in Sicily, the last of the Aghlabids, Ziyadat Allah III, fled to the ‘Abbasid court where he remained until his death. Ahmad b. Ziyadat Allah b. Qurhub, who had previously been the Aghlabid governor in Tripoli, was elevated by the local Sicilian army to become the independent governor of the island. In defiance of the Fatimids, Ahmad pledged allegiance to the ‘Abbasids, and al-Muqtadir sent him a black banner, robes of honour, and a gold collar to confirm his investiture as governor there. He launched several raids against both the Byzantines on the island and the Fatimids in North Africa, and scored a number of successes, including the burning of a Fatimid fleet in AH 302, but following reversals the following year Ahmad’s support began to wane. In AH 304 he attempted to escape to Spain, but was captured and handed over to the Fatimids, by whom he was publicly executed later that year.
