The fortress of Rumelihisari was built by Mehmet II in 1452, to face the earlier Anadolu Hisari across the Bosporus. The obverse portrait of Mehmet II is taken from the celebrated medal by Bertoldi di Giovanni, although the Sultan’s image has been reversed and faces to the right.
