On the night of 6 January 1537, Lorenzino lured his cousin, Duke Alessandro de’ Medici, to his apartment. Lorenzino left, promising to return with a woman. On his return, he stabbed the sleeping Alessandro to death. Lorenzino quickly claimed political motivations for the murder, claiming that he acted to rid Florence of a tyrant. Many drew comparisons to another famous tyrannicide: Brutus. This medal continues that parallel, copying the famous EID MAR denarius.
