EGYPT, Alexandria. Claudius. AD 41-54. Æ Diobol (20mm, 4.86 g, 12h). Dated RY 3 (AD 42/3). Laureate head right; lituus before / AYTOKPA, hippopotamus standing right; L Γ (date) in exergue. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) –; K&G 12.31 corr. (lituus not described); RPC I 5143 corr. (same); Emmett 82.3 (R3). Dark brown patina, area of weak strike, reverse off center. VF. Extremely rare, only two recorded in RPC, none in CoinArchives.

There are only two recorded of this type in RPC; of the two, the ANS specimen seems to show the lituus clearly although the coin is quite worn, but it is otherwise identifiable to Claudius from RY 3. The Paris specimen is too worn to see if there is a lituus with any certainty.

Closing Date and Time: 1 May 2024 at 12:43:40 ET.
