Northern France, Paris. Circa AD 1460. Leaf (3.74”x4.69”). Medieval Book of Hours. Illuminated leaf containing the chant “Maria virgo semper laetare quae meruisti Christum portare caeli et terrae conditorem quia de tuo utero protulisti mundi salvatorem.” Followed by almost all of the Hymn Ad Laudes matutinas, reading:

“O gloriosa Domina, excelsa supra sidera, qui te creavit provide lactasti sacro ubere. Quod Heva tristis abstulit tu reddis almo germine, intrent ut astra flebiles, creli fenestra facta es. Tu Regis alti ianua et porta lucis fulgida, vitam datam per Virginem, gentes redemptre, plaudite. Maria, mater gratire, mater misericordire, tu nos ab hoste protege, et hora mortis suscipe. Ad Laudes matutinas Gloria tibi, Domine, qui [...].

With wonderful and attractive floral illumination around at border and with intricate decoration around capital letters and interspersed throughout the text. From a prayer book worthy of someone of substantial means for the time. Attractive gold, blue, red, green, and white illumination. Good ink, clear and readable. Slight browning at edge. Small old price and code penciled in at lower margin. VF.
