LUCANIA, Metapontion. Circa 470-440 BC. AR Nomos (21.5mm, 8.20 g, 12h). Ear of barley with eight grains; retrograde META upward to left; to right, grasshopper downward / Incuse ear of barley with six grains. Noe 259 (same dies); HN Italy 1486; SNG ANS 257 (same dies); SNG Fitzwilliam 468 (same dies). Slight weakness to strike. VF.

Incuse obverse/reverse dies were carefully matched during creation to make sure the die pair aligned and allowed for complete striking. As dies wore out we occasionally see an unmatched die used, as here. In this case the obverse die has a barley ear of eight grains while the reverse die is that of a six grain barley ear. These mismatched pairs normally didn't last long as the dies wore even more quickly due to the stress placed on the misaligned portions of the design.

From the Wild Rose Collection. Ex ArtCoins Roma 19 (11 November 2015), lot 52.
