Septimius Severus, with Caracalla and Geta as Caesar. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.72 g, 6h). Dynastic issue. Rome mint. Struck AD 201-202. Laureate head of Septimius right / Laureate head of Caracalla right and bare head of Geta left, facing one another. RIC IV 252; RSC 7. Toned, granular surfaces, deposits, slight bend in flan. Good VF.

From the Weise Collection. Ex Gorny & Mosch 115 (5 March 2002), lot 1703.

Without an heir to take up the throne, the possibility of a civil war erupting after the death of an emperor was an enormous threat to public safety. This scarce issue proclaims the continuity – even the eternity – of the dynasty, depicting both of Severus’ successors.
